During the month of August, the Sector experienced a 6% increase in Major Crime; a 60% decrease in violent crime (10 incidents reported in 2008 compared to 4 in 2009) and a 17% increase in property crime (58 incidents reported in 2008 compared to 68 in 2009). The 4 violent crimes reported included: 1 Aggravated Assaults (Domestic related), 1 Aggravated Assault and 2 robberies. Of the 4 violent incidents reported 2 of them have been cleared by arrest and the remaining 2 are still being investigated by detectives. The current trend in Property Crime continues to be thefts related to motor vehicles and residential burglaries.

This month officers and detectives continued to focus in the Church Hill, Church Hill North and Union Hill neighborhoods as a result of the recent crime trends. During this month there were several significant arrests and the identification of possible suspects related to our current crime trend. Here are just a few examples;
• On 8/5 First Precinct Detectives arrested Andrew Willis on an outstanding warrant in the 1300 block of Coalter Street. Mr. Willis is a suspect in thefts from motor vehicles.
• On 8/11 a citizen chased Joseph Forbes past the Precinct where both individuals were stopped. It was later determined that Mr. Forbes had stolen items from the citizen’s yard and was arrested.
• On 8/11 Officer D. Brereton arrested William Mann on an outstanding warrant. During the arrest Officer Brereton recovered several items in Mr. Mann’s bag which were later discovered to be taken during a burglary in the 300 block of N 23rd Street.

Also during the beginning of the month Officers Jayson Walter and Brandon Hill distributed 200 crime alert flyers in the Church Hill area, informing residents of the increase in thefts from motor vehicles. I received a lot of positive feed back from the citizens that received the alert and believe it had an impact on the number of residents leaving items in plain sight in their vehicles.

During this reporting period, Sector 111 officers answered 2275 radio calls, compiled 235 reports and investigated 22 vehicle accidents. They also made 117 misdemeanor arrests, 37 felony arrests, executed 95 warrants, issued 94 traffic summons, seized 5 guns and conducted 119 field interviews.

Crime Trends for August:
• Church Hill – residential burglaries and thefts related to motor vehicles.
• Chimborazo – residential burglaries.
• Church Hill North – thefts related to motor vehicles.
• Fulton – thefts related to motor vehicles.
• Oakwood – no current trend.
• Union Hill – residential burglaries and thefts related to motor vehicles.

With the new school year starting it is important to report any school age children who are seen walking the streets during school hours. You can either call the Truancy number (646-2223) or the non-emergency number (646-5100).
Also, continue to report suspicious persons or activities to the police as soon as possible by calling the non-emergency number (646-5100).
