Local jazz composer, pianist, and social entrepreneur Ashby Anderson is giving parents an alternative to the typical stand-by summer activities for their musically-inclined kids. Since last year he’s been opening his studio, Muse Creative Workspace, to kids looking for a place to play their instruments. Thus, the Richmond Youth Jazz Guild was born. From that came Summer Jazz Camp, a place where kids ages 10 to 18 are exposed to all aspects of Jazz through master classes, ensemble work, theory, and improvisation training.

The camp is broken out into three sessions:
Jazz Boot Camp (July 6-17 & August 3-14)
Big Band Boot Camp (July 20-31)
Jazz Funk Camp (August 17-21)

Each session ends with a concert for family and friends.

Cost is $230 per camp. Not bad considering it’s days of intensive music instruction that will help make your child a master of jazz. Consider it an investment in the future of Richmond’s cultural and creative scene.

Visit the Muse Creative Workspace website for more information, or call (804) 819-0253.
