A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km), often run on closed-off city centre streets. Race length can be determined by a total time or a number of laps, in which case the number of remaining laps is calculated as the race progresses. Generally the event’s duration (commonly one hour) is shorter than that of a traditional road race, however the average speed and intensity are appreciably higher.

Weekly training crits at Bryan Park are a tradition that stretches back over 20 years, this one of Richmond’s most intense regular athletic competitions and seemingly a well-kept secret outside the cycling world. Sponsored this year by the Altius Cycling Team, the Bryan Park crits feature several levels of racing, including youth races with events for the 14 and under crowd. (details)

The Tuesday races start at 6PM. The races are pretty exciting to watch even if you’re not a cyclist. The course is short enough that the pack comes around every few minutes with a flash of color and chrome. Bring a kid and some sandwiches and make dinner of it. Get there a little early and get some fresh items from the Farmer’s Market!
