Prevention Services Announces Summer Educational Programs

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Prevention Services, a division of Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services, is pleased to announce its summer schedule of educational programs. Prevention Services staff have expertise in parenting, divorce adjustment and stress management. They provide services to individuals, families, businesses and community groups. To sign up for a program, call the instructor listed. Fee assistance is available for all classes. Coping with Your Child’s Behavior: The Preschool Years Contact: Whitney Kern, 717-6547 This course for parents teaches practical ways to deal with the challenging behaviors of young children. The class will be held on Tuesdays, June 23-Aug. 11, 6:30-8 p.m., at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 4400 Beulah Road. The fee is $50. Getting to Know Your Young Child Contact: Teresa Stehle, 717-6546 This class is for parents who want to learn more about the basic needs of young children, from newborns to preschoolers. Topics will include learning through play, handling challenging behaviors, child development and how to parent secure and confident children. Child care is not provided. The classes will be held on Wednesdays, June 17-Aug. 5, 6:30-8 p.m., at Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services, 6801 Lucy Corr Blvd. The fee is $50. For Better or For Worse Contact: Robin Jones, 717-6540 This class teaches couples how to communicate what they want to get out of their relationship, how to resolve conflict effectively and reduce arguments, how to solve problems as a team, and how to keep fun, friendship and intimacy a part of their relationship. The class will be held for seven consecutive Thursdays, Aug. 20-Oct. 1, 6:30-8 p.m., at Bon Air Library, 9103 Rattlesnake Road. The fee is $50. Guiding Good Choices Contact: Sherry Callear, 717-6739 This parent-education program is for parents of middle-school students to learn how to strengthen family bonds, set a clear family position on drugs, teach children skills they need to make healthy choices, and increase children’s involvement in the family. The classes will be held Tuesday, June 30; Tuesday, July 7; Monday, July 13; Tuesday, July 21; and Tuesday, July 28, 6:30-8 p.m., at Midlothian Library, 521 Coalfield Road. The fee is $50.
