Police Chief, Assistant School Superintendent To Lead Teach-in For Alcohol Awareness Month

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY – Chesterfield County Police Chief Col. Thierry G. Dupuis and Assistant School Superintendent for Instructional Administration Dr. Edward Pruden will team up on Thursday, April 23, to deliver a special message to fifth-graders at Hening Elementary School about the dangers of underage alcohol use. The presentation is a Reach Out Now Teach-In and is being funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Hening is one of hundreds of schools nationwide participating in the program in April for Alcohol Awareness Month. The 40-minute teach-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will include quizzes and hands-on educational activities. Adults will demonstrate with “drunk driving” goggles how alcohol can impair vision. “Fifth-graders are eager to take on new challenges and become adults, which makes this an important time to discuss underage alcohol use,” said Mary Garber, child safety coordinator with the Chesterfield County Police Department. “Chesterfield County Public Schools and the Police Department are partnering to give youths the facts about alcohol so they can make smart and healthy choices, which will affect all of our futures. We are encouraging parents to talk with their children now about this issue. The benefits will last a lifetime.” This Reach Out Now Teach-In is being coordinated in partnership by Substance Abuse Free Environment Inc., or SAFE, Chesterfield County Public Schools and the Chesterfield County Police Department. For more information, call Chesterfield County Youth Development Specialist Carol Szakmary at (804) 796-7100.
