Briante Weber signs with Miami Heat

This will be Weber’s second NBA stint this season. On March 11 he inked a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

According to the NCAA the odds of becoming a NBA player are 1.2%. VCU star Briante Weber continues to beat the odds.

Briante Weber, VCU’s all-time leader in steals, has signed with the Miami Heat. Contract terms were not disclosed, although several outlets have reported it as a multi-year deal.

Weber spent the majority of the 2015-16 season with Miami’s NBA Development League franchise, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, where he averaged 10.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.1 steals and shot .469 from the field. He ranked third in the league in defensive rating (99.5).

This will be Weber’s second NBA stint this season. On March 11 he inked a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. In six games with Memphis, Weber averaged 4.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals.

A Chesapeake, Virginia native, Weber ranks third in NCAA Division I history with 374 steals. He appeared in four NCAA Tournaments with VCU from 2011-2015 and is the only player in Atlantic 10 Conference history to win three league Defensive Player of the Year awards. Weber led the nation in defensive steal percentage four straight years. In 127 career games with the Rams, Weber averaged 6.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.9 steals per game. He averaged 8.1 points, 4.3 assists and 3.9 steals per game as a senior in 2014-15.

Weber was 12 steals away from the NCAA career steals record before he tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee on Jan. 31, 2015 during a game against Richmond.

The 6-foot-2 guard will be available for Miami’s playoff roster. The Heat (46-33) are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference playoff race and have clinched a spot in the postseason. Weber will join former teammate Troy Daniels of the Charlotte Hornets as VCU alums in the NBA Playoffs this spring.
