Garland Taylor, who also owns Richmond’s three Home Team Grill locations, opened the restaurant as a gastropub in August 2014 in the former Shackelford’s space.

“While The Urban Tavern has a loyal culinary following, we’ve received a lot of encouragement to move our operation downtown into the heart of the food district, and we are currently exploring these options,” Taylor wrote in the news release.

Shackleford’s, which previously occupied the space in the Gleneagles Shopping Center, was in business for almost two decades It closed in December of 2012. Taylor says a new concept will open in the current spot.
