Learn about DNA, drink cocktails, and support a community lab on Friday

Learn to extract DNA from fruit and enjoy cocktails, all while helping a community project come to fruition.

A unique event coming to Scott’s Addition on Friday will combine one part science, one part experimentation, and a third part cocktails.

Indie Lab RVA, a coworking lab of sorts open to the public inside the Hack.RVA space, will be hosting a Post-New Year’s Party where attendees will learn to extract DNA from fruit to make DNA cocktails. The experiment is a simplified, adult-version of something that microbiologists do every single day in the lab. The experiment will involve Bicardi 151, pineapple juice, and strawberries.

The event will also feature a number of dishes made through fermentation. Organizers will describe the biochemistry behind the reaction as well.

Proceeds from the event, tickets to which start at $15, will be used to purchase lab equipment for Indie Lab RVA.

The mission of the new lab is to “create a communal location for all of the experimental sciences to gather, swap ideas, and create experiments/products using shared lab equipment,” according to organizers.

Entry will be admitted only to those 21 and up; IDs will be checked at the door. Dress is business casual. Doors open at 7:00 PM.

Hack.RVA is located at 1600 Roseneath Avenue in Scott’s Addition.
