Henrico Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a vehicle that left the scene of an accident on Staples Mill Road after striking and killing a man Friday evening.

On Friday, August 1, 2014, just before 11:30 PM, Henrico Police and Fire personnel responded to Staples Mill Road approximately 300 feet north of Old Courtney Road for an accident involving a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

A pedestrian was walking in the right travel lane of northbound Staples Mill Road, according to authorities. A Dodge Nitro, driven by an adult male, was traveling north on Staples Mill Road when it struck the pedestrian. The driver of the Nitro stopped at the scene.

A second vehicle struck the pedestrian and left the scene without stopping. The pedestrian, identified as 48-year-old Raymond L. Smith, Jr. of the 900 block of St. Johns Wood Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in this accident concerning the driver of the vehicle that stopped at the scene, according to police. There is currently no description of the hit and run vehicle available, and no charges have been placed.
