For the second straight year, Virginia Commonwealth University senior Eric Maynor has been named one of 17 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award. The Cousy Award, named for the former Boston Celtics great, is given annually to the nation’s top point guard.

Maynor, the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, is averaging 23.1 points, 5.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. He was an All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2008 and was tabbed the CAA’s Preseason Player of the year prior to the 2008-09 season.

The finalists are a virtual who’s who of NCAA basketball. The list includes All-American Stephen Curry of Davidson, as well as UCLA’s Darren Collison, Wake Forest’s Jeff Teague and Ty Lawson of North Carolina, to name a few.

Previous winners include D.J. Augustin (2008) of the Texas, Acie Law IV (2007) of
Texas A&M, Dee Brown of Illinois (2006), Raymond Felton from North Carolina
(2005) and Jameer Nelson from St. Joseph’s (2004).

The group of 17 finalists will be reviewed and a winner chosen by a Blue Ribbon selection committee comprised of Hall of Famers, Bob Cousy, college coaches, media members and a vote representing the top vote getter in the on-line poll at www.cousyaward.com.

The 2009 Bob Cousy Award winner will be announced on Monday, April 6 at the Final Four in Detroit, Mich.
