Two teens shot near Blackwell Elementary, shots fired at Reid Elementary

Incident occurred around 6 PM Monday night.

Update #1 — May 21, 2014; 11:01 AM

A reader pointed me in the direction of this story on NBC12 which covers an incident at Reid Elementary that I hadn’t yet reported. While much further out of the H&H coverage area it is depressing that there were two separate incidents of gunfire near southside schools.

Then, around 8:00 p.m., Richmond police received a call for shots fired at Reid Elementary School. No injuries were reported but several parents said, their kids heard the shots and ran.

“Me and another parent started running toward the gunshots to get the kids,” said Annette Smothers. “But there were so many kids running. It was just chaos.”

She says, kids as young as six years old were running for their lives.

“Their shoes actually came off their feet,” said another mom, Tiangela Cannon. “I had to pick some shoes up from a little girl.”

Richmond police on scene said that they searched the area but couldn’t find shell casings or a gun.

Limited details from RTD.

Two teenagers were shot and wounded Tuesday evening on a basketball court across from Blackwell Elementary School and the Blackwell community pool in South Richmond.

The teens, 17 and 19, were taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, said police Capt. Yvonne Crowder. One was shot in the arm, the other in the back, she said.

Richmond police units responded to the shooting call just after 6 p.m. in the 1400 block of Maury Street. Investigators on Tuesday night were still sorting out what sparked the shooting and who is responsible.
