The Read-In includes readings of black literature by local and national personalities, poets, orators, community members, and community leaders. The Petersburg Public Library is pleased to present the 2009 African American Read-In. We are still accepting speakers.

Location: McKenney Branch, 137 S. Sycamore Street, Lower Level
Cost: FREE
Info: 804-733-2387

A fun and informative Children’s Concert with the African American Thumb Piano! Carl Winters is a brilliant performer and composer. His personality and insight are reflected in his original “Jazz-a-bet” composition. It is obvious in this particular work that Winters hopes to convey a sense of musical history, accomplishment, and pride to young, black audiences. Nevertheless, Winters’ “Jazz-a-bet” is as inspirational and as international in appeal as jazz itself. I would strongly recommend that you experience the music of Carl Winters. You probably won’t get many chances in this life to hear a kalimba and you probably will get even fewer chances to hear the kalimba played by a master. – Dr. John E Ware, Professor of Music

A book on Barrack Obama’s political positions and the challenges he and others faced in pursuit of achievement.

In January 2009, Barack Obama was inaugurated as the President of the United States. Dr. Charles N. Smith was a strong supporter of President Elect Obama. He presents his reasons in a well-organized manner. My one criticism is the continued use of the phrase Black Americans. Race was not to be an issue in this election, yet in this book, it is repeatedly pointed out. Smith does a superb job of stating Obama’s political stance. It is yet to be seen whether Barrack Obama is the hope of a people forgotten or a man whose time has come. -Deborah Gaynor, Outskirts Press
