Richmond Marathon results

Over 19,000 runners took to Richmond streets this past weekend. Here are the big winners.

Last Saturday, 19,629 runners participated in the 36th annual Anthem Richmond Marathon, American Family Fitness Half Marathon, and the HCA Virginia 8k. That number includes just over 450 members of the National Black Marathoners Association, which selected the Richmond Marathon for its ninth annual meeting.

Kenyan Sammy Too, 24, won the marathon’s $3,000 top prize by finishing with a time of 2:15:09. The first female to cross the finish line was Ethiopian Desta Girma Tadesse, 26, with a time of 2:37:55.1

The Half Marathon saw new course records for both the men’s and women’s division. For the men, Kenyan Kimutai Cheruiyot crossed the finish line with a time of 1:02:59, beating the previous recorder holder, last year’s Mengstu Nebisi, by 22 seconds. For the women, Kenyan Pauline Muchiri set a new record with a time of 1:12:47, beating the 2011 record set by Bekelech Bedada by less than one minute.

Emmanuel Bor, 19, won the 8k with a time of 22:41. The first female to finish the race was Alice Kamunya, 22, with a time of 24:53, beating the previous female course record of 25:22.

The top three local runners, male and female, were also awarded money in the third annual Richmond Region Marathon Championship. Michael Tooley was the first male Richmonder to cross the finish line with a time of 2:38:57. Morgan Denecke was the first female with a time of 2:54:15.

The 2014 Anthem Richmond Marathon is scheduled for November 15. A special $65 marathon entry fee and $55 half marathon entry fee is available through 11:59 PM on Thursday, November 21.
