Learn to interpret the spiritual, occupational, vegetal and fraternal signs and symbols found on Hollywood’s headstones and ironworks. Discover the historical origins of the many monument styles including cradle stones, pyramids, pier stones, mausoleums and reliquaries. Open House, Sept. 15 @ 6 pm. Childcare provided for infants and preschoolers; specially designed workshops available for children (grades 1-6) and teens (grades 7-12). Additional information is available at recovery.FBCRichmond.org or by contacting the Recovery Ministry Office of RFBC at 358-5458, ext. 71. The workshop, entitled “Discovering a Future with Hope” offers sessions covering such topics as denial, grief, anger & depression, guilt & rejection, fear & anxiety, loneliness, friendship, self worth, letting go & transition, and concludes with a look forward to a future with hope.

The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VisArts) presents a special talk on the topic of children’s mental health and art therapy, on October 8 from 6:30 – 8:00 PM. The event, Creating an Artful Approach to Treating Behavioral Disorders, will be held at VisArts, located at 1812 W Main Street, and features speakers Bela Sood, M.D., the Medical Director of the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, and Laura Smith, M.S., A.T.R., L.P.C., an Art Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor at Virginia Treatment Center for Children.

Written to coincide with the mansion’s bicentennial in 2013, First House: Two Centuries with Virginia’s First Family by Mary Miley Theobald brings to life the private stories of the governors and their families who shaped the destiny of this unique home. The book traces triumph and tragedy through the turbulence of wars, fires, economic depressions, and renovations in a story that mirrors Virginia’s progress from the nineteenth century into the twenty-first. Mary Theobald, an independent historian and author of several books, taught American history and museum studies at Virginia Commonwealth University.
