Prevention Services Announces Spring Educational Programs

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Prevention Services, a division of Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services, is pleased to announce its spring schedule of educational programs. Prevention Services staff have expertise in parenting, divorce adjustment and stress management. They provide services to individuals, families, businesses and community groups. To sign up for a program, call the instructor listed. Fee assistance is available for all classes. Getting to Know Your Young Child Contact: Robin Jones, 717-6540 This class is for parents who want to learn more about the basic needs of young children, from newborns to preschoolers. Topics will include learning through play, handling challenging behaviors, child development and how to parent secure and confident children. The classes will be held Wednesdays, March 18-May 13, 6:30-8 p.m., at Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services, 6801 Lucy Corr Blvd. The fee is $50. ADHD: A Parent’s Tool Kit Contact: Sherry Callear, 717-6739 This course for parents or caregivers of children with ADHD offers participants tools to help in raising a child with ADHD. Topics include talking to children about ADHD, helping children develop positive behaviors and decrease negative behaviors, teaching children to manage their feelings, and supporting children in being successful at school. Participants will have the opportunity to talk with other parents about common concerns in an informal atmosphere. The class will be held Tuesdays, March 10-April 28, 6:30-8 p.m., at Jacobs Road Elementary School, 8800 Jacobs Road. There will be no class on April 7. An optional martial arts class is available during class time for elementary-school children. The fee is $50. Parenting Your Young Adolescent “The Jekyll and Hyde Years” Contact: Lee Archard, 717-6404 This is an evening course for parents of early adolescents, 10-15 years old. Development, effective communication, relationship enhancement, conflict reduction and behavior management are emphasized. Sessions will be held Tuesdays, March 17-April 28, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Manchester Middle School, 7401 Hull Street Road. There will be no class on April 7. The fee is $55. Beyond Divorce Contact: Karl Kalber, 717-6635 This is an evening course for recently separated men and women who are managing the emotional impact of divorce and setting new directions as single people. Sessions will be held Mondays, March 2-May 4, 6:30-8 p.m. at Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Families First, 9842 Lori Road, Suite 102. The fee is $55. There will be no class on April 6.
