Historical Society Plans Special Presentation For Black History Month

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia will present a free lecture about the history of Carver High School and its principal, W.A. Brown, on Saturday, Feb. 7, 11 a.m., at Magnolia Grange, 10020 Iron Bridge Road. Carver was Chesterfield County’s only high school for black students from 1948 until 1970. The speaker will be Thelma Bland Wyatt, a former student and teacher at the school. The lecture coincides with a special exhibit about Carver at the Chesterfield County Museum throughout February. Immediately following the lecture, the Chesterfield NAACP will present its archives to the historical society. The archives will be added to the historical society’s library on a loan basis and will be available to researchers who visit CHS offices at Castlewood, 10201 Iron Bridge Road. The Rev. Lawrence D. Pollard II, who founded the Chesterfield County NAACP in 1984, will be on hand for the presentation.
