Flying Squirrels home opener is Thursday

First pitch is at 6:30 PM against the Altoona Curve.

The Richmond Squirrels have on the road so far this season, posting a 3-3 record with another game today against Bowie. Their travels come to an end today as after the game they’ll make the hellish drive down I-95 and will probably just barely make the game scheduled for tomorrow evening.

Thursday, April 10th the Squirrels will face the Altoona Curve. Gates will open at 4:30 PM and the first pitch crosses the plate at 6:35 PM. Tickets are available online.

It wouldn’t be a Flying Squirrels game without additional activities. At the start of their 5th Season you can expect the Richmond Flying Circus presented by Jani-King. The evening includes stilt walkers, jugglers, unicyclists, acrobats, fire demonstrations and of course post-game fireworks. Center Stage Band will be performing before the game as well.

I am sure the Chamber of Commerce and the Squirrels will do everything they can to fill those seats. Nothing personal against the Squirrels themselves, but there is a boycott that is growing in response to the flawed Shockoe stadium proposal. We are in it for the long term to win. Please take advantage of the start of the baseball season to let the Mayor, City Council, Flying Squirrels, and businesses that support the flawed Shockoe stadium plan know that we will continue to stand in opposition and exercise our economic voice. “If you build it, we will not come”. Please continue to invite your neighbors to join the boycott. https://www.change.org/petitions/mayor-dwight-jones-we-are-boycotting-flying-squirrels-shockoe-stadium-proposal

    Scott,

Please guve it a rest. You’re like a broken record.

Hey, I am not the one jamming this flawed Shockoe stadium plan down citizens’ throats.

Scott, not everyone is opposed to the project and some even see it as a positive for the city…those who are not opposed do not feel it’s being jammed down anyone’s throats. Of course, though, I’m sure we’re all wrong and you are the one who is right.

I’m sure the squirrels won’t miss you at the opener this evening nor will they miss the folks who may have signed your petition.

If fans don’t want to boycott right now, maybe they will at least sign the referendum petition. Or maybe the Defenders’ petition.

Studies prove that downtown baseball stadium proposals are seldom successful in the long run unless they have strong public buy-in from the start. This flawed Shockoe stadium proposal does not have it.

And if the public referendum movement fails or is overruled, as it was when the highway projects were jammed down citizens’ throats fifty to sixty years ago, then the boycott will still be there.

  7. Scott, bubby, chill out and be reasonable. Just because the developers were selected in secret meetings and there was no attempt to secure a competitive bid or solicitation of any businesses outside of the mayors circle of supporters doesn’t mean that this isn’t a free market system at work. This is a much more efficient mechanism – rather than waste a lot of time figuring out who could do the best job most efficiently, the mayor’s team was free to SELECT whatever developers they wanted based on a secret process known only to them. There’s no public input or any oversight whatsoever because THEY DON’T NEED IT, it’s just inefficient. And they sure as heck don’t need to hear it from you.

The majority of ballparks are fiscal burdens to the cities that build them, but that doesn’t mean this one won’t be an exception This is Richmond, not Ramapo. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/22/nyregion/fbi-raid-in-ramapo-returns-focus-to-ballpark-deal.html?_r=0
