TIP! Stop and marvel at Marvel Unlimited
A digital comic subscription can change the way you experience all those movies!
Six of the 20 highest grossing films of all time are comic book movies. There are more comic book TV shows than you can shoot a web at and more comic book merchandise than trash in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Comic-book-related things are mainstream and super popular. Comic books themselves are…less so. Why is this?
Frankly, it’s arduous to buy and read comics. You’ve got to go to a special store and pay a steep price-per-minute of entertainment. The story in one comic can often be confusing and incomplete–unless you buy ten other comics. It’s hard to know where to start if you’re just jumping in. The pervasive sexism and misogyny don’t help anything, either.
Marvel Unlimited solves a lot of these problems.1 For $10 per month you can read as many Marvel comics (that’s the Avengers, Spider-Man, and X-Men–not Batman or Superman, that’s DC) as you want from their archive that stretches back over 50 years, assuming the comic in question has been out for six months. All of this right from your mobile device! The price is right, it’s super convenient2, and you never feel dumb for dropping three bucks on a total crapbag of a comic–you just skip it and move on to the next one.
If you’d like recommendations on where to start, let’s hang out and I’ll talk at you for a couple of hours!
- It can’t do anything about the misogyny. It does let you read all of the really excellent and positive female-led titles, though–but that’s another TIP! for another day! ↩
- There’s a long and interesting conversation to be had (on another day) about what programs like Marvel Unlimited mean for local comic book stores. ↩
