Emergency crews rescue dog trapped in icy pond

Penny, a coonhound, is expected to be just fine thanks to the quick work of Henrico Fire officials.

Henrico Fire crews rescued a dog from an icy pond in the 11400 block of Battenfield Drive in northern Glen Allen this morning.

Emergency dispatchers received a call from the dog’s owner just before 10:00 AM. The dog, a coonhound named Penny, was reportedly chasing after geese when she ran out onto the pond and fell through a thin layer of ice and was unable to escape.

Fire officials used a boat that was already on site at the edge of the pond to rescue Penny, who was taken to a veterinarian to get checked out.

She is expected to be okay.

Just last week, fire crews rescued a stranded duck in an icy drainage pond near Virginia Center Commons mall.
