Drummers evicted from Carytown Watermelon Festival speak out

The steel drummers say they were asked to leave because they hadn’t paid a vendor fee.

Ram Bhagat and his son set up 5-gallon plastic buckets, tin cans, metal pots and a conga for what has become their annual performance at the Watermelon Festival in Carytown.

On Sunday, festival-goers were grooving to the beat and the vibe was good, Bhagat said. But a half-hour into their drumming in a parking lot across from the 7-Eleven in the 3300 block of West Cary Street, Richmond police working the event asked them to leave the festival premises.
