City Council: Support for chickens, beards

An unusual number of high profile ordinances–including “urban chickens”, pay for police/firefighters, changes to the water/sewer rates, and the appeal of a Commission of Architectural Review ruling–made for an interesting evening at City Council this week.

Flying Squirrels off to a soggy start

The Richmond Flying Squirrels 2013 season opened Thursday night (sort of) at the Diamond against the New Britain Rock Cats. It was cold and rainy, but still kind of awesome.

City Council approves Riverfront Plan, Redskins Deal

Monday was a neat night for a City Council: almost all of the streetlights were out through the Fan down to City Hall, and there were two BIG items on the agenda: the Riverfront Plan and “The Redskins Deal.”

Flying Squirrels: recapping April

Baseball in April is fresh and awkward–hands and bats are cold, the players are all new to each other, good teams are bad, and it’s early enough yet that the bad teams still have hope.

On April 17th, the Flying Squirrels faced the Reading Phillies at the Diamond. The Squirrels ended up losing 6-19 that day. The team is currently 8-9 on the season, just three games away from first place. Here are photos from last week’s loss against Reading.

Last night, the Flying Squirrels welcomed a capacity crowd of 9,560 to the Diamond for their home opener. Taking on division rivals, the Altoona Curve, the Squirrels prevailed by a score of 7-3. Here are pictures of yesterday’s opening day win.
