Rex Richardson’s recital

VCU faculty and trumpeter extraordinaire Rex Richardson is giving a recital on Friday, and we know from experience that these are not to be missed. Says Richardson, it’ll be

“a mixed genre concert featuring the VCU Trumpet Ensemble I, pianists Ksenia Leletkina (young Russian-born DMA student at Eastman), Brian Mahne, and Laura Candler White; saxophonists Skip Gailes and John Winn; bassist Randall Pharr and drummer Brian Jones. It’ll be a cast of…dozens! Well, about one dozen. U.S. premieres by Swedish composer Stefan Johnsson (who will be in attendance) and a world premiere by American composer James Stephenson will be presented.”

Rex Richardson’s Faculty Recital is this Friday, February 18, from 8-9pm at VCU’s Singleton Center for the Performing Arts at 922 Park Ave. Visit VCUMusic.org for more info.

Jazz in the East

For a week in November, some of Richmond’s finest jazz musicians performed at a jazz festival in Turkey, where VCU alumnus Emre Kartari founded the country’s first jazz educational institution. For Kartari and musicians like Doug Richards, Skip Gailes, and Howard Curtis, it was a reunion of sorts. For VCU Jazz students Ben Heemstra, Andrew Randazzo, and Lucas Fritz, it was the trip of a lifetime.

Rex Richardson recital tonight

On the heels of his awe-inspiring jazz recital in February, trumpeter and VCU Associate Professor Rex Richardson’s “classical” recital is tonight. When we spoke in February about his two upcoming recitals, he said about this one, …I’ll be focusing on the music of a great young composer and great friend, Jim Stephenson. Jim has agreed to […]

Led by the jovial director Antonio Garcia, the Jazz Orchestra I made the selections look easy.
