5 things

At the time this was written, Richmond was mid-SNOMG hysteria. So, if you manage to actually get out of the house over the next couple days (and if you’re not the sledding type), here are 5 hip happenings, uh, happening around town.

At the time this was written, Richmond was mid-SNOMG hysteria. So, if you manage to actually get out of the house over the next couple days (and if you’re not the sledding type), here are 5 hip happenings, uh, happening around town.

1. The Velveteen Rabbit

This one has been open for a couple weeks, but if you haven’t had a chance to check it out, add it to your list. Sure, there’s that whole part where the little boy gets Scarlet Fever and his toys have to be burned to get rid of the germs (I had forgotten about that part until I read the book to my newborn a couple years ago…there was much sobbing), but it really is a lovely story about how powerful a child’s love can be. (Here I go again with the sobbing.) The show runs about an hour and is recommended for ages 3 and up (although I hear the little ones are so entranced that kids a bit younger than that should be fine — just ask for an aisle seat in case someone gets the wiggles).

  • Runs through January 9 (morning, afternoon, and evening performances scheduled for Wednesdays through Sundays — including 10am shows which are perfect for the napping/in bed at 7pm crowd)
  • Barksdale Theatre at Willow Lawn (1601 Willow Lawn Drive)
  • $14-$18

2. Disney on Ice present: Princess Classics

Because the best way to escape the cold is to spend a few hours in a room filled with ice! But honestly, your wee ones will probably be vibrating with excitement (Ariel! Cinderella! Snow White! Jasmine! Belle!) and won’t even notice the chill.

  • Thursday, December 16 through Sunday, December 19 (morning, afternoon, and evening performances scheduled; see website for details)
  • Richmond Coliseum (601 E. Leigh Street)
  • $16-$79 (guests are also invited to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots)

3. Black Swan

It’s FINALLY HERE. The Internet lost its damn mind when the trailer for this Natalie Portman/Mila Kunis psychological thriller came out — rightfully so, because it looks very messed up/awesome. You can see that trailer right here (parts of could be considered NSFW, I suppose).

  • Opens Friday, December 17 (show times vary; contact theaters for details)
  • Regal Westhampton (5706 Grove Avenue) and Movieland (1301 N. Boulevard)
  • Matinees are in the $7.50 range; evening shows are in the $10 range

4. 2nd Annual NO BS! Brass Band Coat Drive

Aren’t these guys the best? Incredible talent and good, good hearts. Sigh. Each canned good you bring will get you a dollar off admission (up to 4 cans). Bring a a new or gently used coat and get in for $3.

  • Friday, December 17 (9pm)
  • The Camel (1621 W. Broad Street)
  • $7 (with discounts depending on what you bring to donate)

5. The Polar Express

Ok, I know this week has been heavy on the “sitting” and the “watching”, but it’s really cold out there and that’s pretty much all that sounds appealing right now. Plus, get this: a FREE screening of The Polar Express in the beautiful Byrd Theatre. Can you say “Holiday magic”?

  • Saturday, December 18 (1pm)
  • Byrd Theatre (2908 W. Cary Street)
  • Free (but any donations given will go to The Tad DuPriest Foundation — they are putting on the event and contribute their funds to ASK, an organization dedicated to helping children with cancer)
