Delicious food, sobering historical accounts, amazing feats of athleticism, triumphs of American cinema, and fabulous music. If that doesn’t sound like a great weekend to you, well, I don’t really have anything else to say to you. Here we go: 5 things that will certainly make you feel the Richmond love this weekend.
1. Mini Greek Festival
Ha! No more waiting until spring for that delicious baklava. Hosted by Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the same folks who put on the June version, this one will include pretty much all the same attractions: authentic Greek cuisine (including spanokopita, yahni, the aforementioned baklava, and more), cathedral tours, a bazaar, and dancers. Stop by the website for more information and to check out the complete menu.
- Thursday, November 11 through Saturday, November 13 (11am to 8pm on all days)
- Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral (30 Malvern Avenue)
- Free admission!
2. I am well and war is Hell: Richmond during the World Wars
Set to open on Veterans Day, this exhibit, according to those who put it together, “draws upon imagery, artifacts, uniforms and letters to tell the story of Richmond residents who served in the World Wars, as well as those that remained on the home front.” So basically, I’ll be weeping the entire time I’m there. The opening festivities will include a signature 1940’s cocktail, Sailor Sandwiches from New York Deli, and music from our very own Dean Christesen and his trio. (Do YOU have a trio? Didn’t think so.)
- Opens Thursday, November 11 (reception runs from 6pm to 8pm)
- Valentine Richmond History Center (1015 E. Clay Street)
- Free and open to the public
3. SunTrust Richmond Marathon
America’s friendliest marathon! 26.2 miles of smiles! “Party zones” will be set up all along the course for those of you not looking to run but want to get in on the fun. We’ll have more info on those party locations, as well as road closures and featured entertainment tomorrow, so stay tuned!
- Saturday, November 13 (8k starts at 7am; half marathon starts at 7:30am; full marathon starts at 8:30am)
- Starts at Broad and 7th Streets, finishes at 10th and Cary
- $35 for the 8k; $85 for the half marathon; $100 for the full marathon; walk up registration after November 12 will be available for a $10 surcharge (and of course it’s free to watch)
4. Movies & Mimosas: The Godfather
Just ask my husband how many times a week I do my impression of Jack Woltz finding his prized racehorse’s head in his bed. It’s a lot.
- Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14 (doors open at 10:30am; movie starts at 11am)
- Movieland (1301 N. Boulevard)
- $5.50 ($4.50 with your Criterion Club Card)
5. Live at Ipanema: Lydia Ooghe
It’s that time again! Same deal as always: an awesome musician/band sets up shop in Ipanema, plays some songs, and we post the recording (along with images from the show) on RVANews a few weeks later. The lovely and talented Lydia Ooghe will be gracing us with her presence this go around. Be sure to check back with us tomorrow to check out sounds and sights from October’s show, featuring The Diamond Center.
- Sunday, November 14 (10pm)
- Ipanema Cafe (917 W. Grace Street)
