The Funny Bone Comedy Club opened in Short Pump Town Center a little over seven years ago. I arranged an interview with their manager, Candy Eades, because I have visited the club many times and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the talent.

It made me curious as to how they manage to get some of the top comedians of all ethnicities in their club. Candy explained to me that they are considered an A-rated room, which means ranked amongst comedians, they are a club they want to play. Considering they are a small venue, that is quite a coup.

Candy told me most of the booking is done through a booking agent in California, but they do get some input on talent. Candy and most of her staff has been with the club since it opened. She says the low turnover has allowed the club to become a family atmosphere.

She worked her way up from a server at the club and has been manager for three years. The comedians know they will be treated well when they come and Candy accomplishes this partially by utilizing local venues like Hotel Sierra to house the guests and has arranged the use of American Family Fitness during their stay.

Her patrons come from diverse cultures. There is no one type of comedian that only attracts one type of audience, because comedy is for everyone.

Some of the featured comedians have been Monique, D.L. Hughley, Mark Curry, Sommore, Earthquake and Tommy Davidson just to name a few.

Candy was not sure exactly why it was decided to open a club in Short Pump, but she does say that every Funny Bone is located in a mall. There is a new location opening in Virginia Beach mall soon.

I’m not sure why they chose short Pump either, but I’m glad they bought laughter to our area. Funny Bone is not the first Comedy club to open in Richmond, but they have definitely found a formula for success.
