Kickers playing Cinderella at semifinals of the US Open Cup

The Kickers continue their cinderella story in the US Open Cup, beating a second MLS team in a row! Play the Chicago Fire on August 30th in the semi-finals!

Our Richmond Kickers pulled off an improbable win last night in Kansas City! The Kickers were the only non-MLS team left in the US Open Cup tournament, having played two games this past weekend, faced a Sporting KC side that was on a 12-match unbeaten streak and playing at the newest stadium in MLS. It’s been a fortress for Sporting KC since it’s opening. Against those odds, the Kickers were able to come away from an impressive 2-0 victory. The match was tied 0-0, with Sporting controlling much of the play, when a lightning storm blew into Kansas City and caused an 81 minute weather delay. That break was what the Kickers needed as they were able to put the game away after play resumed.

Here are some links to recaps of the game: Kickers Oust Kansas City; Recap: KC eliminated from U.S. Open Cup.

The Kickers advance to face the Chicago Fire in the semi-finals on August 30th. This is the farthest Richmond has advanced in the tournament since winning it in 1995 (the final pre-MLS cup competition). To catch the Kickers closer to home, come on out to City Stadium on Saturday at 7pm to see the Kickers host Antigua Barracuda FC in regular season play!
