As agreed to by both houses (Senate Joint Resolution No. 40) of the General Assembly, to commemorate Virginia Commonwealth University’s 40th anniversary, July 1, 2008 is VCU Day. And, VCU has a new web site up, all to do with its birthday party plans. Click here to view it.

One feature at the site that’s sure to draw some attention from the blogging community is the contest to pick the local bands that will play at a festival in Monroe Park in the fall. Here’s more about that from VCU:

A birthday party just isn’t complete without music, so we need your help picking the bands. On Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, a unique festival will be held in Monroe Park to celebrate everything that’s VCU, as part of our 40th Anniversary. Vote for the local bands you’d like to see play at the festival. We’ve listed some of the favorites, and you’re free to nominate any that you don’t see on this list. The bands that receive the most votes will be invited to perform at the festival and each performing band will be awarded a cash prize. Get your vote in early, and be sure to tell your friends. Voting closes Sept. 5.

I’m a little bit surprised to not see certain longtime favorites on the list, but as it says above, it’s OK to add names. Here’s three of my favorites that should be on the list … maybe in the geezer category: Billy Ray Hatley and the Showdogs; Page Wilson with Reckless Abandon; The Taters.

Click here to nominate a band not currently on the list.
