We reported on the Great American Backyard Campout event scheduled for June 28 at Ginter Park Baptist Church back in April. The Times-Dispatch has more details — including the fact that space is limited and reservations are required!

“We’re doing the program because our church likes being in the community and we enjoy doing anything that gets people together,” [Pastor R. Lee] Gallman said. “It’s something that will enable us to enjoy nature, our community and each other.”

A hot dog dinner, s’mores, snacks and breakfast will be provided. On Sunday, June 29, an outdoor worship service will be held at 8 a.m., followed by breakfast and Sunday school.

The event is free. But participants must register by calling the church at (804) 359-2475. Space is limited to 300 people or 100 tents. Groups can reserve space to have their tents together.

The deadline for reservations is June 15. If spaces remain, registration may be extended to June 21.

The program will feature outdoor cooking. A beekeeper will bring an observation hive. Activities will include archery, stargazing with the Richmond Astronomy Club, flashlight tag and singing around the campfire.

Campers must bring their own tents; sleeping bags, cots or air mattresses; modest sleepwear; flashlights; personal coolers for their own drinks or food; and sports equipment or outdoor games.
