HonkyTonk Heroes
- Genre: Country
- Sounds kinda like: Two American-flag-painted guitars crossed above a bald eagle.
- honkytonkheroes.net
Bands whose media pages starts with “Devil Went Down to Georgia” are media pages that I end up spending some time on. FIDDLES. Clicking through all of the Heroes’ songs, I’ve learned that there is an entire song about how there’s “Somethin’ Bout a Truck” and then a different song about baiting a hook (which also talks about trucks (and bucks!)!). This is, like, a world I am not super familiar with.

The Milkstains
- Genre: Garagey surf rock
- Sounds kinda like: Surfer Blood with less Vampire Weekend and more heavy, dirty, weird vibes–basically sounds just like Richmond.
- Sweet jam: “La Adelita”
- Listen to the album: Broken Bones on bandcamp »
- themilkstains.bandcamp.com
Ahhhh, back to the safe confines of surf-inspired rock n’ roll; the Milkstains may be Richmond’s perfect summer band. If you’re not familiar with this RVA quintet, they do the most fantastic job of letting surf-rock inspire their sounds just enough to make you feel like dancing, while still keeping things garage-y enough to make you feel like bustin’ some heads. Perfect for those It’s Not the Heat, It’s the Humidity days.

Bio Ritmo
- Genre: Salsa
- Sounds kinda like: Horns!
- Sweet jam: “La Vía”
- Listen to the album: Puerta del Sur on rdio »
- bioritmo.com
It’s intimidating to write about Richmond institution Bio Ritmo, so instead watch this video that takes place inside another Richmond institution.
