Snow Panda’s Ombak Mixes: 4. Oki
Each day for a week, we’re releasing one track from Snow Panda’s Ombak mixes. On Wednesday, October 28, Snow Panda will perform with Ombak at Cous Cous. Today’s track is “Oki.”

Snow Panda says:
There are four different “drummers” on this one, each being timed and pitched a little differently to keep the rhythm interesting. Another Hooten trombone choir sets the pad for the Trey guitar rhythm from “Espial”. I love the end of “Espial” and wanted to do something around that guitar part. Also, the drums are from “As Rome Burns”. That shit is bad if you haven’t heard it. There is a sick groove at the 4:10 minute mark on that track…and it kills me everytime.
Ombak’s Bryan Hooten says:
A group of mercenaries strut though a scorched earth of their own making. They laugh at the ruins of the civilization that once opposed them.

“Oki” is the longest of the remixes. Gabe’s right about the 4:10 groove. He layers the drums in and rhythmic madness ensues.

Hooten and I never discussed meanings of titles. I was sent rough, titled mixes and began working with three concepts. In fact, I think the chosen artwork was a fourth concept that just came during the process. The image is called ‘As Rome Burns’ and is based on the post-apocolyptic feeling that must occur after the downfall of any civilization, especially one as powerful as ‘Rome’. .
The greatest compliment I think I have ever recieved came from Bryan after seeing this for the first time.
Yeah man. That was a heavy moment.
Just realized that I wasn’t clear in my first comment. I was referring to the artwork for the original Ombak release.
And for the record, I have received plenty of great compliments. For example, “Your hair looks really cool when it is wet.” -Amy {Payne}, circa1996.
