Erin Tobey

Erin Tobey

A bouncy-ball dispenser filled with little plastic eggs of the female singer-songwriters we all like like Edith Frost, Laura Veirs, Kimya Dawson, Joanna Newsom, the Blow, Madeline and Cat Power, and then other eggs of Justin Clifford Rhody, Smog, the Microphones, Matty Pop Chart, Vollmar, Beat Happening, and Aphid Ant Constructions. Buy all the eggs and squish 'em up then read some comic books.

Brian Jones

Biran Jones

Brian Jones sings! songs! he wrote! For the first time in several long years (anyone remember agents of good roots) Brian Jones has been convinced, by the charming, persuasive and bullying RVANews staff, that he should share his songs with the world. Featuring big beats, bigger beats, Brian's distinctive song writing voice as well as a wonderful array of instruments swirling about the place Brian brings us back...to somewhere...I'm not sure where..but its nice.

ILAD

ILAD

What kind of music does Ilad play? NO ONE KNOWS - but its wonderful, kinda roots-y, electronic-y, wisp-y, sounds kinda like Radiohead? Maybe like some weird Beatles jams? a supa soul dance band? They will never tell you this but this track was produced by John McEntire...thats a big deal if you don't know. Anyhow, if you don't care, I DO... RVANEWS CARES!!! Anyhow, listen to and decide for yourself what Ilad plays - and then vote accordingly.

Supa Fly Floosies

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS! Supa Fly Floosies are the Eight Track dark horse. -the sole "rap music" entry. But don't let the catchy hooks and sly rhymes cloud your mind toooooo much. There are supa smart music nerd jewels tucked inside the treasure trove of big beats, melodica melodies, flute solos and swirling phaser effects?

Coald Toast

Coald Toast

Freaky droning, maybe yelling, maybe crooning vocals, gamelan backbeats, and strings of all kinds line the inside of coald toast's exceptional offering that, besides having such warm natural sounds coursing through its veins, is also drenched in coald toast's electronic love. Coald toast is tight like James Brown, loose like Sun Ra, and elegant like Olivier Messiaen.

Yet another Richmond treasure, "Singer slash songwriter" does Liza Kate no justice. Possesing a wonderful voice, charming wit, and the caretaker of a wonderful flock of melodies, Liza has been kind enough to lend one of them to RVANews for a play date.

The Great White Jenkins

The Great White Jenkins

Richmond's very own Jake-Legged, Brokedown, Spiritual Soul Revue presents the Eight Track with wonderful new song off their latest EP Mussel Souls. Filled with 3 part harmony, a fantastic little sing along chorus, pounding bass fills and Pinson Chanselle sounding like richard manuel, you can even find fellow eight track-er Josh Small buried in the mix. Ok, Ill be honest this is my band and im going to vote up a storm so if you don't like it you better make your presence felt.

They yell and scream, kinda yodel sometimes and bang on weird shit and plink and plank around on the piano and play that guitar in all kinds of ways. The OK Bird does all that i promise, I'm not even kidding. It sounds pretty tight too....all that together on one quick song. Listen for yourself and see if you don't like it! LISTEN!!

JSeger

JSeger moved to Brooklyn!!! HOWEVER, before he headed north he left behind this gem of a song recorded with Emily Easterly and recently released on his eponymous debut album. We, over here at RVANews, will miss Jay tremendously and wish him the best.... but will never concede that Brooklyn is more awesome than Richmond, and in the future will DQ anyone that moves to New York...or visits there....or talks about it....ever. 2. Matthew McDonald on March 17th, 2008 9:27 am

also i thought these bands sucked. you know? i assumed, “oh yeah ok guys artsy indy type shit. you guys are cool. get a real damn job.”

but on the real this is good. all the songs were awesome. go richmond!

  3. mattwhite on March 17th, 2008 9:37 am

    yea. go richmond for realz!

  4. Scott Burton on March 17th, 2008 11:57 am

I just voted…and I didn’t even have to register…Thanks Mr. Wilder! This stuff rules.

  5. BROCKTUNE on March 17th, 2008 6:45 pm

    GENTS! BROADS! OTHER!
erin tobey - pleasant enough. Lotta KRECS passiveness flowin’ freely throughout the whole track. Total The Glow Pt. 2. There ain’t a whole lot to say bout it. Its just there ya know?

Prabir - come on brotha. more sugar-coated shit to feed the masses. Nice rocker in the middle, for ten seconds of relief from that effin’ nasal blastin’ bellow (if seagulls could bellow). Ted Leo did it better in Chisel, and you streched that line to the breakin’ point three years ago.

Brian Jones - I dig. Smackin of that early 00’s Touch and Go/Chicago stuff (Eternals/Enon etc.) without gettin too zaney. Chill ass drummin’ and sequencing? It works.

Ilad - lotta build up for little reward. can’t remember the last time an echoe effect bored me that much. not on drugs right now either, so “I don’t get it?” Can hear McEntire signature helibuzzthing and the clarity on the drums. Eh, whatever.

  6. John on March 17th, 2008 7:37 pm

Speaking of Wilder, any chance of having each candidate for mayor record an audio track for a fall political music throw-down?

  7. Sarah on March 17th, 2008 9:06 pm

Truth be told, I lost interest in all the songs each at 2 minutes in.

  8. Garry on March 17th, 2008 9:56 pm

    top 4 favourite moments..

    1. Erin Tobey’s tight muted trumpets
    2. Ilad’s beast jam. Wait for it
    3. Brian Jones sings like a grizzly bear
    4. Erin Tobey’s tight muted trumpets

Brian’s you’re puttin’ booze in shopping carts and breakin’ hearts, mine - and drinking Beck now? Anyhow, you remain the man.

Tourneys! Voting! America! If we were in Nigeria a song sadly would have killed another song and won. Good to be here.

    Thanks for the happy!

I saw Prabir and the Substitutes live at Toads. Loved them. Love their music.

  11. Casey on March 19th, 2008 2:19 pm

This is why I left Richmond… Brian Jones is the most compelling of these songs but the lack of confidence leads to nowhere. What else you got?

  12. mattwhite on March 19th, 2008 6:08 pm

    questions…

    1. why did you leave Richmond?

    2. who’s lack of confidence? Brian Jones presumably? do you mean his performance lacks confidence? also what do you mean by nowhere?

    3. what else does who got? Brian Jones or RVANews?

  13. prabir on March 21st, 2008 11:34 am

    great stuff here rvanews.com
a good way for bands and the community to check out one another’s work

    …my toast just got coalder…

  21. brhino on March 28th, 2008 1:55 pm

There is an obvious intellectual gap between all above artists and Coald Toast. The sophistication and approach to Toast’s electronic waves, rythms, and unorthodox vocals makes it superior.

  22. Sissu Palsdottir on March 28th, 2008 5:13 pm

“Coald Toast” It is so challenging, full of NEW depth,
keep it up and PLAY FOR THE WORLD. Just love it!

  23. Scott Burton on March 31st, 2008 12:45 pm
