Classics

Mamma ‘Zu
Go to Mamma ‘Zu if you are looking for a good meal. Period. Sure, this place has topped every ‘Best Richmond Restaurant’ list, but I’m putting it on there again, because it offers good Italian food, good wine, and a cozy atmosphere. There’s really not much else you could want for a decent Valentine’s evening.

Get there early with your date or grab a group of friends — they are now taking reservations for parties of six or more.

The Hard Shell
Located near the bottom, The Hard Shell has always been an excellent choice for fresh seafood (the crab leg dinners are a personal favorite of mine). No need to drive to the beach for good sea fare — book your reservation and enjoy your favorite fish dish in the downtown setting.

Millie’s
There is always something so quaint about spending an evening at Millie’s, like you’re sitting in your best friend’s home waiting to down some amazing food. This is one of my favorites for a special meal as they have distinctive dishes served in an inviting atmosphere. I was told that a special menu will be prepared for the evening, but head over early, because they will be serving on a first come first serve basis.

Star-Lite
Star-Lite is one of the Fan staples. There’s hardly a good night that doesn’t end with drinks at this local bar, so why not incorporate it into your Valentine’s plans? Book your seat for the ‘Scotch and Steak’ dinner on Valentines Day. $60/person will get you a three course meal followed by a flight of Glenlivet Scotch. Ohh Star-Lite, you’ve done it again…

New hot spots

Balliceaux
The new guy in town, Balliceaux popped up on the Richmond scene from the ashes of the old Bogarts building. The place is stunning. Upon entering the restaurant you already feel like a rock star about to indulge on a meal with his posse. The food is very unique, offering a variety of vegetarian, meat, and seafood dishes. If you’re looking for a new experience for Valentine’s Day, call ahead for a reservation and head over to Balliceaux.

Bonvenu
A newcomer to the Richmond scene, Bonvenu boasts an electrifying exterior that grabs your attention as you walk down Cary Street. ‘Bonvenu’ means ‘welcome’, and that’s exactly how you will feel as you settle into the comfortable, yet modern interior of this chic restaurant. The menu features twists on classic dishes, including a delicious risotto accompanied by fresh vegetables. You and your date will be met with a warm welcome, both in atmosphere and food, so call ahead and book your reservation for Valentine’s weekend.

Romance on a budget

Mexican
There are quite a few Mexican staples around Richmond; Little Mexico on Main Street, and Viva Mexico in Carytown, just to name a few. Most places offer your basic Mexican-American fare at a reasonable price. For a low-maintenance, fun time, get your date and load up on nachos and margaritas. Because nothing spells romance quite like a tequila-infused Valentine’s evening.

8 1/2
If you feel like spending some time at home, order some excellent Italian takeout from 8 1/2, located on Strawberry Street. Their menu offers some of the best Italian staples, boxed up for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. Swing by the VideoFan next door and make it a dinner and movie night.

Mary Angela’s
Another great Italian classic for pizza and subs. For a very reasonable price, you and your date can nosh on a delicious hand-made pizza in the back of the cute restaurant on Cary Street. It may not be the most glamorous, but you can’t beat the food… and the prices.
