The folks over at the Library of Virginia have kindly bestowed upon us three, count ’em three copies of Dead in the Water (a novel written by Virginian Meredith Cole) which will be the focus on their next installment of Books on Broad, scheduled for July 22. And we’ll be giving away copies to some very lucky winners.

Here’s a summary for you:

Photographer Lydia McKenzie is taking portraits of prostitutes on the waterfront of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, when her art project takes a deadly turn. She discovers the body of Glenda, the star of her series, floating in the East River.

Lydia’s new boyfriend doesn’t want her to get involved in the investigation, and neither does NYPD detective Daniel Romero. But Glenda’s grieving mother begs her for help. So when the D’Angelo brothers, her bosses at the detective agency where she works as an administrative assistant, send Lydia out to the Williamsburg waterfront to catch their cousin’s cheating husband and bring back photos as evidence, she starts to do some sleuthing on the side.

When more women are murdered, Lydia teams up with a volunteer organization whose mission is to help women find a way off the streets. As she becomes more involved with the group, Lydia ends up questioning her choices, her relationships, her art, and her identity — while she runs for her life from a killer who isn’t finished with a deadly rampage.

If you’re not familiar with Books on Broad, it’s quite the delightful evening during which book-lovers get a chance to sit down with authors, enjoy some refreshments, and enjoy a lovely, literary chat. Books on Broad happens monthly and each installment highlights a specific work of a Virginian author. You don’t need to read the book to go, but it’s a nice bonus. That’s where we get to help…

Enter to win a copy of Dead in the Water here. The contest closes at noon on Friday. Once we pick the winners, we’ll be in touch about getting the book to you.

Good luck!
