Where would you send out-of-towners to eat?

Where would you send them? And, just for kicks, tell us why.

  1. Six Burner – 1) great location in the Fan (showcases a neighborhood that sets Richmond apart) 2) fabulous food made with fresh local ingredients 3) amazing wine list 4) delightfully friendly service – attentive but also relaxed 5) a great example of why Richmond’s dining scene is such an asset.

  2. Well, I *would* send them to Pennylane Pub, if that counts as easy to get to. Otherwise, I think it’d be Carytown Burgers because it’s (almost insanely) eclectic and yummy.

  3. edos, ole, 821, croakers spot

  4. MIllie’s for Brunch. It’s exactly like Richmond.

  5. Mamma ‘Zu–not only is it my favorite restaurant and one that has the best food in Richmond, but it gives out-of-towners an interesting perspective on Richmond.

  6. Cafe Rustica, Arianna’s, Hill Cafe, Jo Jo’s, Thai Diner Too, NY Deli, Joe’s Inn, Kuba Kuba, Carytown Burgers, Cafe Europa, City Dogs

  7. How could I forget these guys? Yum Yum Good, Cafe Ole & Superstars.

I think all these places are great Richmond places and any out of towner would be lucky to dine at any of them.

  8. Black Sheep. Good people, good food, good salt and pepper shakers/lamps, sandwiches the size of the universe.

For dinner: Mamma ‘Zu, Six Burner, Verbena. For brunch: Millie’s, Black Sheep, Can Can, Full Kee, Avenue 805, Rustica, Kuba Kuba … so many great choices. Mmmm now I’m hungry!

Specifically vegan/vegetarian: Definately Panda Veg and Harrison Cafe, both have great atmospheres and are relatively easy to get to.

Restuarants with options for both the meat eater and the non: galaxy diner, sticky rice, carytown burgers and fries and thai diner too.

  12. Also, kind of out of the way, but Indian Pastry House rules my world. Traditional South Indian Tiffen (Breakfast/lunch food), pretty cheap and galactically good.

Mary Angelos for lunch, or ashland’s smokey pig

Kuba Kuba- for any meal, you just can’t beat it! It’s also in such a cute part of town that you don’t have to give the sometimes necessary “don’t worry, the neighborhood only looks unsafe”.

For the next level of difficulty, what if it was nine strangers instead of four? How many places on your list does that eliminate or make much more difficult?

  18. Ipanema (recommend the vegan tofu ceasar or any entree over $12 cuz it’ll be worth it) .

Mekong (because most towns don’t have Vietnamese restaurants with a menu as extensive).

    Please…don’t encourage them.

  20. Carytown? Hope they like Thai or Sushi (or maybe, Coppola’s)…Close the deal w ice cream at Bev’s…

  21. Also, there is some mystery catering place that delivers food to Laxmi Palace grocery on Old Parham around 3 or 4 every day, that will melt your face with excellence. I still have no idea where it comes from, but it is all AMAZING home cooked Indian goodness…in a bag!

  22. Duh! Tobacco Company!

(bwaaaahaha! you know somebody had to say it!)

  23. We love Twitter. We ALL love Twitter. Join us or die.

  24. Viva la Twitter!

  25. Chioccas for great sandwiches.
Popkin tavern for variety and atmosphere.
    Millies for brunch.

  26. Joe’s Inn….because it was the first place I went to in Richmond and still remains one of my favorite places in the city.

  27. Oooh, same here SnowPanda – good stuff :)

Grandpa Eddie’s Alabama Ribs & BBQ for real southern Q. Everything is home-made, great ribs, out of this world smoked wings, Western Carolina Pulled pork and you absolutely can not leave without getting the World Famous Peanut Butter Pie (seriously, they even have it on the appetizer menu, so you can get it before you get too full!) Also, great place for live music, every weekend, for FREE!

Texas de Brazil – for an authentic Brazilian meal. The lobster bisque and the buffet/salad bar alone is worth it, but the meat is off the charts! not the least expensive place in town, but wow. Not really the place for kids, although they don’t discourage it.

Full Kee for authentic China Town dim sum. Most cities of this size just dont have dim sum. Dont expect to be wowed by the decor, but the food is great. this is real Chinese food. often you may be the only non-Asian there.

Little Venice – hands down the best Italian in town. Only downfall is they are closed on Sunday. Dont miss the stuffed artichokes.
