UR remembers Lora Robins

(Sorry to have two stories in a row about beloved Richmonders passing away, but, well, that’s the way it goes sometimes.)

From the University of Richmond:

Mrs. Lora M. Robins, H’73, widow of the late E. Claiborne Robins, Sr., passed away on Sunday at age 98. She lived a remarkable life that is evident on our campus and throughout the greater Richmond area.

From the transformational gift announced in 1969 to the most recent Robins Foundation gifts to support the Westhampton Center and E. Claiborne Robins Stadium, the Robins family’s support has touched every area of the University and changed thousands of lives.

The Robins family has given the University of Richmond the opportunity to be more than it could have otherwise imagined, and Mrs. Robins was there at every step of the way, guiding and shaping our future. With so many other institutions in the Richmond area where she made a significant and lasting difference, we are profoundly grateful.

The University of Richmond flag will remain lowered this week in recognition of her passing.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Education Building at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. on Friday, and the memorial service will be followed by a reception. Burial will be private.

In 1969, Mrs. Robins and her husband (E. Claiborne Robins) gave $50 million dollars to the University of Richmond, the largest ever given to an institution of higher education by a living donor.

The Robins family has given UR over $200 million, including that gift.

Lora Robins Court and Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature at UR are named in her honor, as are the Lora and Claiborne Robins Tea House at Lewis Ginter and the E. Claiborne and Lora Robins Sculpture Garden at the VMFA.
