At 12:59am Saturday morning, the To the Bottom and Back bus was struck from behind while it was stopped in front of Baja Bean (1520 W. Main Street, which also happens to be where the RVANews office is located).
To the Bottom and Back provides free transportation on the weekends to and from Shockoe Bottom in an effort to prevent fun-seeking Richmonders from drinking and driving.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the bus, Thomas S. Burt, was charged with driving under the influence and driving without an operator’s license.
Shortly after the incident To the Bottom and Back had this to say on Twitter:
#RVA, please do NOT drive drunk. We are *always* here to take you home. http://twitpic.com/1jvo5x http://tweetphoto.com/20610318

So once the drunks are dropped off at Elwood Thompson’s, then how do they get home?
We crawl home to Malvern Manor.
Mariane,
The bus gives people who don’t live downtown the flexibility to park at their friends places and crash there, without having to worry about getting back to their friend’s from the bar.
Didn’t he start the B2B bus because he’d been hit by drunk drivers before? Cripes.
I read this news aloud to my party while I was sitting outside on Baja Bean’s patio last night. “Guys. Exactly 24 hours ago…”
They will also drop you off anywhere along the route. That covers a lot of area so you really can forget about driving if you take the bus and walk a little bit.
Mariane, I highly doubt too many of the bus customers are driving in from Short Pump or Midlothian just to save $2 for parking in a deck downtown. Most all of the customers live along the route: Carytown, The Museum District, The Fan, Oregon HIll, VCU, Monroe Ward, Downtown, Shockoe Slip & Shockoe Bottom, Church Hill, and Tobacco Row.
