This winter’s SNOMGs vs. last winter’s SNOMGs

We’ve got a couple snow events under our collective belts so far this winter, and I was just wondering how you think we’ve handled it this time around, as compared to the last go-around, both early this year and late 2009. By “we” I mean Richmond citizens AND the city of Richmond itself.

Before I get started, I must bring up the fact that I have lived in Richmond for every single second of my 29 years on this planet and I don’t ever recall us getting this much snow within a 12-month period. Ever. And I have a memory like a steel trap, ask anyone. Or just my husband. He hates my memory BECAUSE IT ALWAYS WINS.

Anyway, moving on…

We’ve got a couple snow events under our collective belts so far this winter, and I was just wondering how you think we’ve handled it this time, as compared to the last go-around — both early this year and late 2009. By “we” I mean Richmond citizens AND the city of Richmond itself. So…

Were Richmonders just as panicky and hysterical as expected or did we keep our cool? (I personally was almost out of milk and bread and didn’t even break a sweat.)

Do you feel like the schools responded appropriately? (They’re on break now, but most kids in the area did end up getting a couple bonus days off.)

How about the roads? There have been snow removal issues in the past; how did they do this time?

  1. Have lived in Richmond all my life to AND Lately It feels like I am Living in Conn,Mass,Maine,Alaska u name it! *LOL* As far as snow removal Def Noticed an Improvment,Henrico County(My neck of the woods) and VDOT in general…People will ALWAYS Panic with this stuff! *LOL* And Yes I make sure I have food Lined up just in case.. hahaha.. I AM READY for LONG Term Sunshine, 80’s,90’s,Heat and Humidity.. haha..

  2. Not really understanding the road situation.

I tried to leave my parents house ~9:30pm Christmas day. They live off Qualla road in the southside some 13 minutes from civilization and the road was completely effed. I made it about 1000 ft. before I decided I’d had enough, and I then managed to slide into a ditch as I attempted to turn around. Got out of the ditch by driving forward and using the next driveway edge to pop the car out.

I spent the night and, fearing the worst, left ~4:30pm the next day. Much to my surprise, Qualla and all subsequent roads were *completely* clear. That is, of course, until I reach the good ol’ RVA. Boulevard was fine but everything else I drove on was completely fucked — Sheppard, Cary, Floyd, and Shields.

Note that I would normally head up Idlewood instead of Cary but a plow was busy trying to clear the Sheppard bridge over the expressway and blocked my way. My guess is Idlewood was just as effed as everywhere else.

What gives? Is it a money problem? Why is it some practically backwoods roads in the southside can get cleared well before anything in the city? is it a logistics problem? Is it impossible to clear roads in the city because they’re always full of cars (parked and otherwise)?

  4. Brando, this might explain some of it: http://rvanews.com/news/snow-removal-in-richmond-or-lack-thereof/25257

“…Virginia Department of Transporation (VDOT) handles the snow removal (and general road maintenance) — except [for] Henrico and Arlington. All of those roads in Chesterfield, Hanover, and the like? They’re on VDOT’s beat. Meanwhile, Henrico and Richmond each receive an annual payment from VDOT to cover road maintenance, e.g. pothole repairs, streetlight maintenance, and, yes, snow removal. It is then up to each locality to decide how to budget that money.”

No idea! The day it started while at my parents, but i moved to be close to them since its just me now so my trip on the way home wasn’t far & not bad in Chesterfield. Next stayed home & around 4pm the kids & I with our dog walked to my parents, that was a nice adventure! Their neighborhood was plowed while ours was not, not sure how that happened since our two neighborhoods connect!

After coming from the VB area after this latest storm it was like driving on a freshly paved road up here.
