Some of you might not be aware of this, but a group of people has been camped out at Monroe Park for a spell to draw attention to The Rescue*, a country-wide demonstration intended to draw attention to the child soldiers of Uganda.

The basic idea is that different groups of people gather to represent those children being forced into military service in Uganda. The group must then be “rescued” by 1) getting local media coverage of their presence and 2) having a celebrity/politician/some sort of big-up around arrive and acknowledge what they’re doing. All of this draws attention to the cause, raising awareness, and hopefully putting steps into motion to put an end to the exploitation.

We’ve got word from an insider that a certain someone performing at The National tonight might be making plans to rescue the group in Richmond today. It’d be nice if some local government figures made an appearance as well.

*FYI, the site has been having trouble today, so you might not be able to get it to load. Keep trying!

  1. Valerie & the entire RVANews team:

THANK YOU! Thank you for carrying this story. If I’m not mistaken, you guys are the ONLY media outlet in Richmond who has reported this amazing story, and believe me, ALL of the media outlets have been made aware of what’s going on. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Here’s hoping someone will come to #therescue of those abducted.

While this is certainly a cause that requires attention, I find it ironic that the demonstration is being held in Monroe Park, an area of Richmond known as a place where the homeless congregate. Sometimes I wonder if we are being blind to the needs of our neighbors in the interest of serving international populations.

  3. To Anonymous:

I personally thought it was BRILLIANT that the abducted of The Rescue were so close to Monroe Park. It was great to see some awareness for homelessness raised in tandem with the efforts to make people aware of the horrible atrocities being committed by Joseph Kony in this 23 year old war in Uganda. My heart breaks for both terrible situations. Apathy and indifference are the enemies here in America.

Curious, why the Anonymity of your post?
