Interns! We need some interns!

Because we love educating young minds, RVANews is looking to bring on some new interns this summer. Also, our current interns are fixing to graduate, so we’ve got some shoes to fill.

Because we love free labor educating young minds, RVANews is looking to bring on some new interns this summer. Also, our current interns are fixing to graduate, so we’ve got some shoes to fill.

We’re looking for an editorial intern AND a marketing intern, but we’d be willing to take on more than one, should the opportunity present itself.

Both internships are unpaid but are eligible for class credit with approval from your college. You’ll be working 10 hours a week (give or take) out of our offices on the 1500 block of W. Main Street.

Here are specifics and application instructions:

Editorial intern

The editorial intern will become an integral part of the RVANews staff, working with our team a minimum of 10 hours per week to brainstorm and develop content for our website. He/she is expected to submit 1-2 feature stories (600 to 800 words) per week, 2 major investigative pieces (including research, interviews, quotes, photographs, etc.) per semester, in addition to assisting with the daily and weekly development and implementation of our regular content.

The intern will be held to the standards of style, accuracy, fairness, and deadlines maintained by RVANews. He/she will be responsible for completing necessary research, making contacts, and establishing sources during the internship period, and will be expected to develop stories that are of interest to the community.

As this position includes regular updates to the RVANews Web site, an understanding of WordPress is preferred.

To apply: Please e-mail a cover letter, two writing samples, and a list of 3 potential stories pertaining to the Richmond-area that you’d be interested in covering to val@rvanews.com with “Editorial Intern” in the subject line.

Marketing intern

The marketing intern will become in integral part of the RVANews staff, working with our team 10 hours per week to assist in marketing efforts for our website.

His/her responsibilities will include:

1. Maintaining our events calendar, a valuable tool on our site that helps serve our audience and advertisers.

2. Assisting our sales and marketing manager in various administrative tasks, including pulling data and running reports for our advertisers. The intern will also have opportunities to shadow our sales and marketing manager during meetings with clients.

3. Contributing to and helping to implement our marketing plan for 2010 (including new media, print, and online efforts)

This internship requires experience with Microsoft Excel and social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook.

To apply: Please email a cover letter and resume to Valerie Catrow at val@rvanews.com with “Marketing Intern” in the subject line.

Note: Interns must love or at least tolerate “your mom” and “that’s what she said jokes.” Interns will also be required to submit at least one example of said jokes into casual office conversation before the semester is up or you get a big fat EFF with a capital E.

    FOR REALS.*

    *Not really for reals.

  2. We also provide lunch on Tuesdays.

  3. I’ve heard that there are sometimes donuts. Do you share with the interns?

  4. I would love to intern! I think I would be better used as the Internet Surfing Intern. Need one of those?

  5. We share everything with the interns. We also give them tickets to things and make them go ride rollercoasters.

But seriously, we just need some responsible people who aren’t afraid of a little hard work.
