Big cuts made at the Times-Dispatch

Some major layoffs are happening over at the TD today, including longtime movie reviewer Daniel Neman and award-winning cartoonist Gary Brookins (the guy behind the nationally-syndicated comic strip Pluggers). Cuts include reporters, editors, copy desk editors, layout and design artists, and other support staff. More here and here. It sucks. Good luck, you guys.

  1. This isn’t confirmed yet, but we’re hearing rumblings that cuts were not limited to the newsroom. Looks to be more like 60 people lost their jobs today.

  2. Yet the big guns stay. GP puts the ax down, yet you’ll never see his byline, nor will he design a page or edit a story.

  3. Couldn’t agree with you more, David.

  4. OK I have no concept of how many people it takes to run a newspaper (because, hello, paper, what’s that about?) Do they have enough staff to continue production? Someone educate me on these things.

  5. Griffith on said:

Does Marshall Morton really need to make around 700K a year? Why not take a pay cut instead of firing people who are just barely making it by. How much does one man need to make to live comfortably?

  6. I feel like as the owner/president/CEO/etc. of a company, if you’re at risk of having to cut people’s jobs, you need to take a look at your salary first.

Here’s his profile in Forbes if anyone is interested:

I’m sure it’s not all him, but it kind of makes my blood boil.
