Don’t let today’s weather (and tomorrow’s for that matter) fool you. We’re looking at sun and totally reasonable temperatures for this weekend. Take a gander at some of your choices for this weekend…

1. First Fridays Artwalk

Yes, I know it happens every month. And yes, I know it’s supposed to be a tad rainy and chilly. But with all the conversation going on about the state and future of Richmond’s culture scene, it seems like a good time to head out in full force to support this fixture in RVA’s art world. Friday, June 5th, all along Broad Street, FREE! Go here for a list of featured exhibits.

2. 2nd annual Backyard 500 Pedal Car Tournament at the Children’s Museum

School is almost out (or for some of you, it might already be). Your kids are probably vibrating with enough energy to power your entire house. So, what better way to spend a Saturday with the little ankle-biters than careening around a track border by bales of hay in cars powered solely by the energy produced by their frantically pedaling feet? Kids will have 15 cars to choose from, and every participant in the Backyard 500 pedal car race will receive an admission ticket to the Richmond Kickers game that evening. Saturday, June 6th, 10am to 4pm, free with museum admission ($8).

3. From Belles to Battleaxes: Women of Civil War Walking Tour

I have to admit, the use of the term “battleaxes” is 78% of the reason why this made the list. The remaining 22% is because it promises some sweet insider know about Richmond women, from “daring spies and devoted nurses to star-crossed lovers and captivating socialites.” Basically it’s gossiping while getting some exercise. Saturday, June 6th, 1pm to 2:30pm, tour begins outside the Bell Tower outside the the Virginia State Captiol on Bank Street, $7 for members, $10 for non-members. Advanced registration is required, so go here for more info.

4. Singin’ in the Rain at Movieland

It’s already in your head now, isn’t it? HA! To me (and probably the rest of the world), the Hollywood musical just doesn’t get any better than this. Add a little bubbly mixed with orange juice and you’ve got yourself what I call a perfect Sunday morning. Sunday, June 7th, 11am, 1301 N. Boulevard, $5.50 general admission, $4.50 with your Criterion Club Card. Still costs extra for drinks.

5. Broad Appétit

This was a big hit in Ought 8 (its inaugural year), and people have been jonesing for it ever since. Food? Art? Crowds of people? That there is the perfect recipe for a happy Richmonder. The event promises mini dishes prepared by 50 of Richmond’s best chefs, live cooking demos, and exhibits from dozens of local artists. Sunday, June 7th, 12pm to 5pm, on Broad between Monroe and Adams, free to get in, dishes generally cost between $2 and $4. Go here for more info, including lists of participating chefs and artists.

Know of anything else going on this week? Leave it in the comments.

(If you have an event coming up that you want help promoting, let us know. It just might end up making the list!)

  1. I hate broad appetit. Last year my car got towed because of it. I might waterballoon it from my apartment. So watch out!

I loved Broad Appetit, but I didn’t bring much money. This year I plan to stuff myself until my torso bursts into a bloodsoaked mess, so y’all better get there early.

I’m also going to try to make it to First Fridays so I pick a fight with Dale Brumfield.
