Feast your eyes on some of the excitement going down this weekend…
1. Richmond Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream
This one has been open for a bit, but it’s getting great reviews and is only around for about another week. Even if you’re not a huge Shakespeare fan, it’s hard not to enjoy a show featuring love potions, clandestine meetings taking place in the woods, and a guy who gets semi-morphed into an ass (the donkey-kind, not the other kind, you sick-o). This weekend through May 10th, Thursday through Saturday performances at 8pm, Sunday afternoon performances at 2:30, Second Presbyterian Church, 5 N. Fifth Street, $13-$26. Go here for more info.
2. Army of Darkness at Movieland
Boy howdy, has Insomnia Theater got a treat for you guys this weekend! Army of Darkness stars none other than Bruce Campbell (mister chiseled-jaw himself) and is directed by Sam Raimi, the brain behind the Spider-man franchise. One could call this a horror/comedy/adventure film. Does it get any better? No. It’s campy, it’s loud, and it’s fun. And it includes the line, “This is my BOOMSTICK!” Here’s the trailer if you need more convincing:
Friday, May 1st, 11:30pm, 1301 N. Boulevard, $5.50 general admission, $4.50 with your Criterion Club Card.
3. Cinco de Mayo Festival at Brown’s Island
As the 5th of May happens to fall on a Tuesday this year, the 2009 Cinco de Mayo Festival will get the festivities started a little early with food, beverages, live music, and children’s activities (I’m imagining lots of pinatas and minors wielding baseball bats. Yesssssss.) And don’t worry, I’m sure there will be PLENTY to do on the For Real Cinco de Mayo that will likely involved Coronas, salsa, and debauchery. This will just tide you over until then. Saturday, May 2nd (rain or shine), 1pm to 7pm, Brown’s Island, Free! Go here for more info.
4. 16th Annual Kentucky Derby Day Party
Hats! Horses! Mint juleps! Huzzah! Watch the big race on the big screen while gnoshing on some gourmet food and dancing with your snazzy co-partiers. It doesn’t get fancier than that! The event also includes a silent auction with funds benefiting the Richmond Ballet. Saturday, May 2nd, 4pm to 10pm, Rocketts Landing, $80 (includes drinks and dinner). Contact Caitlyn Powitz at (804) 344-0906 ext. 238 or by e-mail at cpowitz@richmondballet.com for info.
5. For Pete’s Sake, Sing! at The Camel
Pete Seeger is THE GUY when it comes to American folk music. His songs include: “Turn, Turn, Turn!”, “If I Had a Hammer,” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” among others. He also joined Bruce Springsteen in singing “This Land is Your Land” at Obama’s inauguration. Ol’ Pete is turning 90 on Sunday, so cities throughout the country (including RVA, YAY!) are getting together to pay tribute to him. Funds will benefit Musicians in Need. Sunday, May 3rd, 6pm, 1621 W. Broad Street, $10.

Whoa how is NASCAR not in here? NASCAR PEOPLE. I don’t claim to understand it. All I know is this:
Last time I went I had twenty four beers in a plastic kroger bag and the guy at the gate made me give him one or he wouldn’t let me in. No joke!
Seriously I love NASCAR.
the UPS racecar is parked outside my work right now
