Dudes! There is so much going on this weekend! I must say, I had a tough time sorting through all of it to make our recommendations. But alas, here they are. Hope you like ’em!

1. Glows in the Dark at The Camel

The brainchild of RVANews’s own Scott Burton, Glows in the Dark is sure to give you a nice fix of jazzy goodness. Here’s a little bit of info about them from their myspace page:

Glows in the Dark is an avant garde jazz group based in Richmond, Virginia. Formed in 2007 by Scott Burton as a new outlet for his music, Glows is an on-going attempt to meld jazz and free improvisation with the story telling qualities of movies (or “films” for the serious). The idea being to create music that’s engaging, challenging and always evolving.

Sounds good to me. Thursday, April 23rd, set at 8pm and 9pm, 1621 W. Broad Street, $5.

2. Mozely Rose at the Capital Ale House (Downtown)

Something about warm weather makes me want to listen to southern rock. Must be because I’m from the Southside. And I went to high school with some of these guys – they’re good people who work hard and love what they do. And one of them has long hair and big, bushy beard. WIN! Friday, April 24th, 10pm to 1am, 623 E. Main Street, $8 in advance, $10 at the door.

3. RavenCon2009

I can’t explain to you the joy and amusement that rushed through my heart when I saw this. A weekend celebrating Science Fiction AND Fantasy AND Horror??? This weekend-long event promises panel discussions, COSTUME CONTESTS, and, wait for it, The Gaming Room (that, according to their site, “never closes! Ever!”) Get your cloaks and 20-sided dice ready. Friday, April 24th through Sunday, April 26th, Crowne Plaza West at 6531 W. Broad Street, $40 for adults, $15 for young adults, kids are free (day rates also available). Go here to register.

4. Video Games Live with the Richmond Symphony

Holy moly, it’s like a nerd’s dream this weekend! An entire night devoted to celebrating the most popular video game music of all time, complete with synchronized lighting, live action performances (!!!), and the ever-so-mysterious promise of “interactive segments.” Demos, gaming competitions, and costume contests will also be happening before the show, so get there early. What percentage of people at this event do you think will have the “dunna dunna dunna” bit from Super Mario Bros. set as their ringtone? My guess is a lot. Saturday, April 25th, 8pm, Landmark Theater at 6 N. Laurel Street, $20-$60. Go here for tickets.

5. Canal Boats and Cobblestones Walking Tour

We’ve got some incredible weather on the books for this weekend, so you need to get outside at some point. Vitamin D is essential, particularly if you’ve been inside gaming all weekend. Hosted by the Richmond History Center, this tour will highlight some of Richmond’s preservation efforts in Shokoe Slip, the Turning Basin, and the warehouse district. Sunday, April 26th, 2pm to 4pm, meet your tour guide at the James Center Clock Tower at 10th and Cary, $10 due to your guide on the day of the tour.
