Here we go, here we go now…

1. French Food Festival

I mostly put this one up out of guilt. Funds from this event will go to benefit the Little Sisters of the Poor, a group of NUNS who care for NEEDY ELDERLY. Basically I feared that God would strike me with a lightening bolt if I didn’t include it. And, I mean, who doesn’t love food? At a festival, no less? Saturday, April 18th, 11am to 7pm, 1503 Michaels Road, free to get in I’m sure, but to partake in the cuisine prepared by Chef Paul Elbling (formerly of La Petite France) will cost extra.

2. 25th Annual Chili Cook Off

Who knew that the Chili Cook Off had been around that long? Not me. Chili Cook Off, you’re all grown up! Anyway, this event has gotten all the fixings for a good time: bands, professional and amateur chili makers, crowds of people at RIR trying to shake off cabin fever. Saturday, April 18, 11:30am to 7:30pm, Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Avenue, Advanced tickets are $20, $25 at the gate. Go here for more info.

3. Spring Bada-Bing!

Also known as the most entertainingly named event in Richmond. Put on by the Richmond Craft Mafia, the 4th Annual Spring Bada-Bing! will feature loads of SAWEET handmade goods from local and national craftsters. Plus they’re offering free SWAG bags to the first 250 customers. Hop to, you handmade goods groupies! Sunday, April 19th, 11am to 4pm, Planet Zero (2 E. 4th Street).

4. The Birds at Movieland

Ok, I have a thing (read: PALPABLE FEAR OF) with birds. So, naturally I watch this movie whenever it’s on, because I’m loony (ha HA! Loony! I didn’t even mean to do that!) It’s pretty hard to deny the fact that this is one excellent film, sure to be made more excellent by 1) mimosas and 2) the companionship of those who also recognize the film’s greatness. And I will pay 100 doll-hairs to the person who shows up to the movie wearing this. Sunday, April 19th, 11am, $5.50 general admission, $4.50 with your Criterion Club Card, booze costs extra.

5. World Music Festival

Our music writers here at RVANews are all about the world music. This will give you a chance to see what all the fuss is about. Sunday, April 19th, 3pm to 6pm, Camp Concert Hall/Greek Theater at the University of Richmond, FREE!

  3. Also, the Virginia Premiere of “Well” opens at Barksdale Theatre Willow Lawn April 17 (through May 17th):

“Lisa just wants to put on a nice, orderly play about growing up and how she was cured of her allergies. But her mother, watching from her La-Z-Boy, keeps offering snacks to the audience and interrupting with her version of events. Soon Lisa loses control of her autobiography when the actors she hired to help tell the tale begin siding with her mom, and a bully from elementary school crashes the narrative.”

  5. There is also a Carnatic vocal performance by S. Sowmya on Friday night at Douglas Wilder Middle School. Also a Richmond Rasikas event. Its 20 bones, but she is an amazing vocalist.

  6. ILAD and NO B.S. Brass Band at the Camel FRIDAY night April 17th at 9PM. It’s ILAD’s CD release of “Here//There” and it’s also the second in a series of NO B.S.’s Mashup/Collaboration Series…..a night not to be missed!

Think of it as a pregame to all the other stuff you’re going to do this weekend!
