1. Mingus Awareness Project featuring The Mingus Awareness Big Band (conducted by the inimitable Doug Richards), Brian Jones’s M.A.P. Trio, Fight the Big Bull (playing Mingus-inspired originals), and some DJ sets by Richmond Public Radio’s Peter Solomon. If in your cold heart you like music at all this is a special special occasion that you should be missed for only the best of reasons….babies being born, mothers dying, maybe the occasional sporting event? $12, 4-7pm, Gallery5, 200 West Marshall.

2. Beastie Boys. The Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow, Jack Johnson, and Norah Jones perform at the Coliseum Tuesday to encourage “voter registration”?? It’s too late for that guys, but you can go see The Beasties slather you with big beats, tight rhymes, and plenty of political hype. 7 p.m. Richmond Coliseum, $35. 601 E. Leigh St. 262-8100.

3. Jam Bands!! Dave Matthews AND Trey Anastasio. Both Jamband legends make it to Richmond this week. Dave and his acoustic guitar shredding cohort Tim Reynolds play Sunday at the Siegal Center (free, first come first serve) and Phish frontman Trey Anastasio brings his solo troupe to The National on Saturday for $35. Can we come up with a Rock/Paper/Scissors featuring Jam Band characters? Trey beats Dave who beats John Popper, but John Popper def beats Trey?

4. Arthouse Film Festival. In an effort to showcase some of the creative work being produced by talented Virginia residents, Yellow House presents the 2nd Annual Arthouse Film Festival. If you like movies, creative work, AND Virginia residents this seems like a sure-fire winner. Firehouse Theatre, 7pm 1609 W. Broad St. 355-2001.

5. World Series. THE FALL CLASSIC!! Tell me this. Can we take a poll on what is actually the best Sports Bar in town? Saturday night, Sunday night, Monday night.
