So much for a summer slow down. We saw tons of great things happening in June, like a Brian Jones group playing original music to Tom & Jerry cartoons. Fugazi’s Joe Lally came to town for a gig with Glows in the Dark, and GITD spent the rest of the busy month on tour. We previewed the Artomatic festival in D.C. (city pride came into play), which would see one whole day become Richmond Band Day. Photos and a review act as evidence of the takeover. The Runaway Circus/Ilad/Fight the Giant Bull show at Gallery5 was announced, interviews with the Circus’s Britt Tyler and the Bull’s Matt White previewed it, and photos followed.

In another big bill, the Richmond Summer Brass Fest brought New Orleans trombonist Jeff Albert and his quartet to Bogart’s with No BS!, Verbatim, and R2Dtoo. Albert’s all about having fun, so we knew he would fit in. The night before the event, Bogart’s installed a stage that dramatically effected the club’s vibe. Jason Arce Quintet featuring John D’earth played at the pre-stage Bogart’s in June, and we got the audio.

Independence Day was approaching and the Richmond Marching Band was hard at work preparing for their march, but…ice cream? Brian Jones and RVAJazz teamed up to launch a series called Conversations. He explained his goals, and Taylor Barnett’s dialogue with Doug Richards was first up.
