Who Is Michele Rosewoman?

According to DOWNBEAT Magazine pianist/composer Michele Rosewoman is “one of the under the radar stars of American music”. Her incredible gift for percussive piano playing comes from studying Jazz piano in Oakland CA while also learning percussion and Cuban/Haitian folkloric idioms. She has played with such renowned Jazz artists as Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, Rufus Reid, Reggie Workman, Billy Hart and, Cuban master drummer/ vocalist, Orlando ‘Puntilla’ Rios. Rosewoman has recorded eight albums as a leader, most with her critically acclaimed ensemble Quintessence, whose members have included some of the most inventive voices in Jazz, including Greg Osby, Terri Lynne Carrington, David Sanchez and, Virginia saxophonists Steve Wilson, and Mark Shim. She is a winner of the 2008 Doris Duke Foundation New Works Creation and Presentation Commission. Ms. Rosewoman also teaches at NYU and the New School for Social Research.

Who is Mark Shim?

Mark Shim, a former Richmonder and student at Virginia Commo

nwealth University, is considered one of the most exciting young saxophonists on the New York Jazz scene today. Since moving to New York in 1994 he has played/recorded with Mose Allison, Betty Carter, the Mingus Big Band and legendary drummer Elvin Jones.
