No BS! does a new kind of good

No BS! Brass is spreading the love on Friday night, but not just in their regular incessantly funky way this time. They’re calling the show the first annual No BS! Brass Canned Food and Coat Drive, and they’ll be rewarding you for doing good with discounted cover charges for making donations.

No BS! Brass is spreading the love on Friday night, but not just in their regular incessantly funky way this time. They’re calling the show the first annual No BS! Brass Canned Food and Coat Drive, and they’ll be rewarding you for doing good. Bring in a canned food item and receive a dollar off of the $6 cover for each can, up to three. Have an old winter coat lying around? Donate a gently-used coat and get $3 off admission. Proceeds will go to the Central Virginia Food Bank and Good Will.

The music community in Richmond knows the band’s incredible ability to make you want to move while shocking you with unique arrangements and top notch individual voices. Hopefully that’s becoming common knowledge outside of certain music circles. At the band’s last show in November, there was what seemed like a brand new contingent of people in the audience. I walked in during a set break around midnight to a packed club and I recognized no one but the band. Attribute it, perhaps, to the opening band Hot Politics from North Carolina and the fans they drew, but it’s still a good sign of No BS! taking over more minds. We might be surprised by who starts coming out to No BS! shows, but with most VCU final exams coming to a close this week, I’ll take a wild guess: students?

High Noon — a band comprised of local younger students from James River, Patrick Henry, and Atlee high schools — will be opening. No BS!’s blog says the show will have a holiday theme, with special drinks and decorations. Let’s hope there’s caroling…

  1. YAY!

  2. You all should’ve seen that stack of cans and coats! I’m kicking myself for not taking a photo. It was impressive.
