At this evening’s VCU Jazz Orchestra I concert, Director of Jazz Studios Antonio Garcia announced that trumpeter Dave Douglas would be in residency with VCU Jazz in April 2010.

Some of Douglas’s recent releases include A Single Sky, which features arrangements by Jim McNeely and the performance of Douglas with the Frankfurt Radio Bigband, and Spirit Moves featuring his small brass band. Along with being a brilliant performer and composer, he also created the Greenleaf Music record label and regularly blogs on that website and as a guest contributor over at NPR’s A Blog Supreme. (Attention Twitter users: @dave_douglas) Every performance of his in the spring is not to be missed!

One of my favorite Douglas albums is Soul on Soul, his 2000 sextet tribute for Mary Lou Williams. What’s yours?

I am partial to “Infinity” – although the Quintet recordings from the Jazz Standard- and a lot of his other stuff- is great as well. Not to mention Masada.

This is a significant coup- saw his Brass Fantasy band at Blues Alley a few months back, and they were spectacular.
