Weather! The heat strikes back

June was a record-setting month for Richmond. The average temperature for June 2010 was 81.1 degrees, which shatters the old record of 79.2 degrees from June 1943. This means that two of the three warmest Junes on record have occurred in the last three years, as June 2008’s average temperature was 79.0 degrees. Last month […]

Last month was also the second driest on record. We only received 0.82” of rain in June, and over half of that – 0.43” – was received on June 28. The record is 0.38”, received in June 1980.

From the “here’s something cool” department: NOAA is now issuing experimental forecasts for the presence of sea nettles (you probably know them better as jellyfish) in the Chesapeake Bay.

The good news is that we’re looking at clear skies all weekend. The less than good news is that our break from the heat will be over, but the humidity will take its time making its return. Despite the heat, you can’t ask for much better weather for watching fireworks or anything else you plan to do this weekend.

High pressure will be in control all weekend, keeping the cloudcover down and letting the temperatures climb back up. With that in mind, here’s your weekend forecast in a nutshell.

Saturday: High in the upper 80s. Low in the lower 60s.
Squirrelcast (vs. Erie, 6:35pm): First pitch: Mid 80s. Fireworks: Mid 70s.

Sunday: High in the lower 90s. Low near 70.
Squirrelcast (vs. Erie, 6:35pm): First pitch: Upper 80s. Fireworks: Low 80s.

Monday: High in the upper 90s. (Record 101, set in 1990.) Low in the low 70s.

This pattern of clear, hot weather is going to continue well into next week; our next shot at rain is probably next Thursday. Enjoy your weekend!
